Lower Zambezi & South Luangwa – 8 Nights

Immerse yourself in the beauty and stillness of Zambia’s wild landscapes. This journey begins along the mighty Zambezi River, where peaceful waters, rich wildlife and relaxed luxury set the tone for the days ahead. From there, travel deep into South Luangwa National Park, one of Africa’s most iconic wildlife destinations, where warm hospitality, exceptional guiding and remarkable sightings create a safari experience that stays with you long after you return home. This itinerary is beautifully suited to solo travellers, couples or small groups who want a relaxed, immersive and deeply memorable safari. You may also extend your journey with extra nights for a slower pace or to explore more of South Luangwa’s remote sectors.

Lower Zambezi

Lower Zambezi

The Lower Zambezi is where the river becomes your compass and the rhythm of the wilderness sets the pace of each day. Wide, open channels teem with life, elephants wade through the shallows, and lions rest in the winterthorn shade as boats drift quietly past. It’s a landscape built for slow, sensory exploration – from canoeing along mirror-still waterways to drifting at sunset with the escarpment glowing gold behind you. This is a region defined by its tranquillity and the intimacy of its encounters, offering a peaceful yet deeply immersive safari experience.

Baines' River Camp

Your adventure begins in the Lower Zambezi, a serene corner of Zambia where nature feels close, gentle and wonderfully alive. At Baines’ River Camp, the pace slows as the river moves steadily past the lodge and wildlife drifts in and out of view. The landscape is peaceful, the air warm, and the sense of escape immediate. Days unfold with relaxed river safaris, exceptional birdlife and the chance to spot elephants, buffalo, and hippos along the riverbanks. Sunset cruises bathe the water in soft gold, while expertly guided outings offer the chance to try the famous Tiger fish. Evenings settle in with starlight, great meals and the sound of the river carrying through the trees.

South Luangwa

South Luangwa

South Luangwa is the beating heart of Zambia’s safari story – raw, wildlife-rich, and home to some of Africa’s most respected guiding traditions. Here, game drives feel unhurried and authentic, with each turn of the river revealing scenes that stay with you long after you’ve left. The Luangwa River draws an astonishing concentration of wildlife, while the valley’s rich habitats create a sense of discovery from dawn to dusk. It’s a destination that pairs warm Zambian hospitality with remarkable sightings, ideal for travellers seeking depth, character, and a true connection to the bush.

Nkwali Camp

From the Zambezi, fly into South Luangwa and settle into a camp positioned right on the river, where the wild pulse of the valley becomes part of everyday life. The Luangwa River is the lifeline of the park, drawing wildlife in remarkable numbers, and your camp is perfectly placed to experience it all. At Nkwali Camp, the river views are serene and expansive. Each corner of the camp is designed to make you feel connected to nature – whether you’re watching elephants wander across the riverbed, listening to hippos grunts below, or crossing by boat into the park for your morning game drive.

Luangwa River Camp

Luangwa River Camp offers a tranquil alternative, set beneath a grove of ebony trees at one of the region’s most beloved river crossings. Large herds of elephants pass close to camp, hippos graze nearby at night, and the guiding team ensures every game drive feels personal and unhurried. With exceptional wildlife diversity and one of Africa’s highest concentrations of leopard, each outing offers a sense of anticipation and discovery. Here, you’ll find the perfect balance of comfort, warm hospitality and unforgettable wildlife encounters.

South Luangwa: Nsefu Sector

South Luangwa: Nsefu Sector

The Nsefu Sector offers a completely different dimension to South Luangwa – quieter, more remote, and steeped in wilderness heritage. Its ancient ebony groves, sweeping salt pans, and untouched river loops create a sense of exclusivity matched by only a handful of historic camps. This is one of the best areas in the park for specialised experiences: walking safaris that follow old elephant pathways, exceptional birding, and seasonal spectacles such as the bat migration further north. For travellers who want South Luangwa at its most pristine and atmospheric, Nsefu delivers something truly rare.

Tena Tena Camp

Your journey continues into the remote Nsefu Sector in the northern part of the park – a place known for its exclusivity, history and exceptional wildlife viewing. This is one of the most atmospheric corners of the Luangwa, shaped by towering trees, sweeping riverbanks and a deep sense of wilderness. Tena Tena Camp lies beneath a beautiful canopy of mahogany trees, offering peaceful river views and a feeling of complete seclusion. The camp sits along a quiet sweep of the Luangwa River, creating a perfect setting for travellers seeking space, stillness and uninterrupted nature.

Nsefu Camp

Further upstream, Nsefu Camp brings rich history and charm. As Zambia’s first photographic safari camp, dating back to the 1950s, it retains an intimate character with just six rondavels overlooking the river. With very limited safari operators permitted in this entire sector, your experience here feels private, with spacious views and wildlife often appearing right in camp. This part of the valley is known for its exceptional sightings – from elephants feeding on fruiting trees to predators moving through the grasslands and vast flocks of birds gathering along the river.
