Fishing
Whatever kind of fisherman/lady you are, we have the bait to get you to Sekoma.
The Zambezi and Chobe offers every fisherman wonderful opportunities. Sekoma Island Lodge is situated on the Zambian side of the Mambova Rapids on a stretch of river that experiences annual flooding. This phenomenon acts as a stocking system where the area becomes home to a large variety of insects, crustaceans, flora and of course, fish.
The waters surrounding Sekoma are a paradise for the adventurous angler, whether a conventional, lure or fly fisher, you are up against Tiger Fish, large Tilapia, colourful Bream species, and African Pike. The formidable Tiger Fish is world-renowned for being a fierce, hard-fighting fish that has a reputation of being the toughest freshwater fish to pursue.
A variety of fishing methods can be used, with fly-fishing and lure fishing being predominant. (Some of the species caught are; Nembwe (olive Bream), Tiger Fish, Thinface Largemouth, Humpback Largemouth, Threespot Tilapia, Redbreast Tilapia and Sharp Tooth Catfish.
The lesser-visited backwaters can be explored where many of the vegetarian species of bream such as the Greenhead Tilapia and Pink Happies call home. Tiger fish are caught predominantly by fly fishing and artificial lure fishing, during April however, the river is high and discoloured, and we do permit some bait fishing using circle hooks.
Sekoma carries 12 boats in its fleet, which are powered by 60hp motors. Boats can take a maximum of fisherman at any one time. Angling on the river is undertaken on fully carpeted, fiberglass bass boats which have been modified with snag-free decks for fly fisherman/ladies.
Untouched rapids can be accessed from mid-July through to December by Ark Inflatable Boats, which is a must for the avid angler as you can be eye-to-eye with magnificent sporting fish
Bird Watching
With over 400 species of bird, Sekoma Island Lodge is a bird watchers paradise. Waterfowl, raptors, hornbills, heron, flycatchers, bee-eaters, Turacos and the shy African Finfoot can be seen.
After the first rains birds descend on the island, large flocks of Green Pigeon and Trumpeter Hornbills swoop the canopies, feasting on figs. The Trumpeter Hornbill can be heard for miles with its baby-like cry.
During the low-water season Rock Pratincoles can be spotted raising their families on the large rocks at the centre of the rapids. Migratory birds can be seen during the summer months when birds from all over the world flock to the region to breed.
Raptors are well represented on the island, with the African Fish Eagle the most prolific bird of prey. The Pel’s Fishing Owl has also found a safe haven in the forest on Sekoma Island. Our guides at Sekoma Island Lodge have an outstanding knowledge of the fauna and flora, they will be more than happy to take you for a tour of the island or on a river cruise.
Game Viewing
Half and full day Game Viewing excursions can be arranged on the Chobe River as an extra activity.
Game viewing does not get better than this: Close-up encounters with wildlife on a sunset cruise on the Zambezi and Chobe Rivers. In the dryer months, from September to November, the area teems with herds of elephants crossing the Chobe River. There is plentiful variety of game grazing on the open floodplains
Herds of 300and more buffalo are not uncommon in these parts. Leopard have also been spotted taking a drink on the banks of the river.
The Zambezi and Chobe Rivers are home to some of the largest crocodiles in Southern Africa and in cooler months you can see these impressive reptiles basking themselves on the riverbanks.
Hippo is also a common sight and you can even wake up to a Hippo grazing on your doorstep early in the morning.
Full and Half Day Trips into the Chobe National Park is an extra activity and can be arranged at the lodge.
Sekoma Island is an hour-and-a-half drive from Living and is part of a chain of islands and channels in the centre of the Mambova rapids above Kazangula and opposite Kasane.
